Westbury, NY, May 19, 2005— Muslims of America now have a new venue for television programming with the announcement today that Bridges TV, the American Muslim lifestyle network in English, is now available nationwide on DISH Network. EchoStar Communications Corporation’s (NASDAQ: DISH) DISH Network™ satellite television service has added Bridges TV to its programming lineup on channel 578.
To commemorate the launch of Bridges TV on DISH Network, Dr. Faroque Khan, a board member of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and President of the Islamic Society of Long Island (ICLI), will honor DISH Network with the prestigious Bridge Builder Award. Past Award recipients include world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. The award is in recognition of DISH Network's more than decade-long service to American Muslims and its support of the American Muslim television network. The launch event will be held on Sunday, May 22 at 11 a.m. ET at the Islamic Center of Long Island, 835 Brush Hollow Road, Westbury, NY 11590. Tel: 516-333-3495.
Bridges TV offers American Muslims some of the most relevant cultural programming in English, which makes the network appeal to immigrant Muslims, American-born Muslims and mainstream Americans interested in Muslim cultures and people.
Subscribers can enjoy shows such as Each Other, about a Muslim girl trying to succeed as a big-city reporter; the network’s morning show Salam America; Bridges News, the network’s original daily newscast and Muslims Across America, a show that profiles major community events and stories. These programs join lifestyle-themed cartoons, cooking shows, current events shows, family-friendly sitcoms and movies that bring American Muslim issues to the forefront.
The specialized network, headquartered in Buffalo, NY, attests to the growing numbers and economic strength of the seven million American Muslims in the United States. Islam is the second largest faith in America and, with a 6.2 percent annual growth rate, it’s the fastest growing religion in the United States. However, Muslims remain a misunderstood group. Bridges TV hopes to create better understanding between American Muslims and mainstream Americans.
Bridges TV CEO Muzzammil Hassan pointed to the overwhelming support that Muslims showed for the network before it even launched. “Before we were even on the airwaves, more than 10,000 American Muslim homes paid a monthly membership fee to show their support for the network. This kind of unprecedented grassroots support from American Muslims shows not only that there is an audience for Bridges TV, but also that American Muslims are deeply committed to changing perceptions of Muslims around the world,” said Hassan.
“We are very proud to be the first to create a television marketplace to bring together American Muslims and to do so with DISH Network, which has provided every American interested in Muslim cultures the opportunity to bring Bridges TV into their homes,” Hassan added.
Earlier in March, world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali personally launched the network in Chicago. Ali believes that Bridges TV allows Americans to get to know American Muslims the way they would get to know their next door neighbor, seeing them everyday in natural situations at work and at home. “Bridges TV gives American Muslims a voice of their own on the airwaves for Americans of all races and religions to hear,” he said.
Bridges TV is available through DISH Network on channel 578 for only $14.99 per month on an “a la carte” basis. Bridges TV is broadcast from the 61.5 and 148 degree orbital locations. A second dish may be necessary for some subscribers to view the channel.
